parging

The rendered lining to a chimney.

patera

A small flat individual repetitive carved floral ornament.

pedestal

Base to column or statue.

pediment

Triangular gable.

pendant

A ceiling boss elongated so that it hands down.

pendentive

The vaulted in-filling at the angles where a polygonal structure charges to circular.

perpend

Vertical joint appearing in the face of a wall.

pier

Solid masonry support.

pilaster

Part of a column or shallow pier projecting from a wall.

pitched

Surface produced by a pitching tool to resemble the natural rock face.

plinth

Projecting base of wall or column.

pointing

Filling to mortar joint.

porosity

Ratio of volume of pore space to volume of rock given as percentage.

porte-cochere

A porch large enough for wheeled vehicles to pass through.

portico

The entrance and centrepiece of the façade.

poulticing

Method of drawing soluble salts or stains out of stone by applying an absorbent paste.

Pozzolana, pozzolanic

Originally a volcanic earth from Pozzuoli ( Italy ).
