Elements that mirror each other.

hardness

Resistance to abrasion depending on cohesion of grains and hardness of constituents.

hawk

Tool for holding mortar ready for application by trowel.

head

Lintel.

Temporary support below a lintel or arch.

herringbone work

Work in which the units are laid diagonally. Alternate courses lie in opposite directions.

hollow bedding

Setting of blocks with mortar at the ends only, the centre section being left hollow to prevent

breakage in case of settlement.

honed

Having a dull polish or a matt surface.

hood-mould

Moulded canopy over a door or window opening providing weather protection.

hydrated lime

Product obtained by slaking quicklime with water.

hydraulic lime

Quicklime able to set in the presence of water. Hydraulic lime is said to be emminently, moderately

or feebly hydraulic.
