face bedded

Stone laid with the bed plane running vertically and parallel to the face of a wall.

fair end

 

A clean cut end of a stone.

falsework

Temporary support used in construction.

fascia

 

A plain, horizontal band.

ferramenta

Metal bars used to support leaded windows.

festoon

 

A curved garland of fruit and flowers.

fettling

 

Hand dressing the joints of a paving slab.

fine axed finish

Axed finish to granite.

finial

 

A ornament at the top of a gable or pinnacle.

flagstone

 

A paving stone made from sedimentary rock easily split into flat slabs.

flame textured

Rough face on surface of granite achieved by spalling the face with a high-temperature burner.

flexural strength

The property of a material to resist flexing.

flint

 

Cryptocrystalline silica originating as nodules in layers in chalk.

flush joint

Mortar joint the surface of which is level with the face of adjacent masonry units.

fluting

 

Shallow, concave grooves running vertically on the shaft of a column, pilaster or other surface.

fluted

 

Surface worked into a regular series of concave grooves.

flying buttress

An arch transmitting lateral thrust from the upper part of a wall to an outer buttress.

flying staircase

A staircase where the steps are cantilevered.

foil

 

A lobe or leaf-shaped curve within a tracery window arch.

footing

 

Stepped courses of masonry in foundation.

free lime

 

Lime in a mortar which remains as calcium hydroxide rather than carbonating.

freestone

 

Stone workable in any direction.

frieze

 

The middle division of an entablature.
