dado rail

A rail at approximately waist high.

dentil

A series of small square blocks in the decorative part of a cornice.

diaper work

Decoration composed of small repeated patterns.

die

Intermediate solid pier within a balustrade.

dome

Hemispherical vault, circular on plan.

dowel

Short piece of metal or slate sunk into adjacent faces to align and/or prevent movement.

drafted margin

Tooled margin worked on the edge of a rough-faced stone.

drag

Tool with teeth for finishing the flat surface of soft stone.

dragged

Having irregularities on the exposed surfaces of soft stones worked off by the use of a drag.

dressed

Any kind of worked finish.

dressings

General term for decorative masonry features.

drip

Projection below a horizontal surface to prevent rainwater flowing back to a wall.

drum

(1) A vertical wall supporting a dome or a cupola.

(2) Individual stone in the shaft of a column.

dry stone wall

Stone wall constructed without mortar.

Dutch gable

A gable curved on elevation.
